The 123's of ABC in SAP

The 123's of ABC in SAP by Dawn Sedgley and Chris Jackiw - both from Alta Via Consulting - is without equal on the subject of ABC and advanced cost management in SAP's R/3 system. It exposes a level of experience and insight which you will find in very few consultants who pass themselves off as experts on the subject. This book has been described as 'a work that does not suffer fools' and reflects Alta Via's commitment and drive in the market segment where we compete. The 123's of ABC in SAP is available through national book retail outlets in the U.S. or through the websites of online bookseller such as:

The Management Accounting Philosophy Series

This groundbreaking series of three articles first looks at what is wrong with management accounting and then proposes foundational principles for the profession.  The proposed principles are intended to provide a common frame of reference that everyone can use to separate the chaff from the wheat in management accounting and bring consistency to a discipline that has become known for conflict, contradictory methods and the resultant frustration of their customers – managers.

This series was published during 2007 in Cost Management magazine and is currently being turned into a Statement of Management Accounting (SMA) for the Institute of Management Accountants.  PDF versions of the three papers are available for download from the Alta Via Public library.

Debating The Principles Series

This is a follow-on series that builds on the management accounting philosophy series and engages management accounting approaches currently used in the marketplace on the strengths and weaknesses of the principles on which each are based. The first three articles in this series examine the principles upon which Theory of Constraints (TOC), Lean Accounting (LA) and Activity-based Costing (ABC) are based and poses questions regarding the adequacy of their foundational underpinnings.  The purposes of the series are stated as (1) pointing to limitations of alternate principles that make them unsuitable for use in the decision science domain, and (2) highlighting problems and inconsistencies in approaches that employ such alternate principles.

This series was published in Cost Management magazine during 2008 and 2009.
PDF versions of the papers are available for download here: Debating The Principles: ABC And Its Dominant Principle of Work; Debating The Principles: Asking Questions of Lean Accounting; and Debating The Principles: Theory of Constraints.

The Lowdown on Lean Accounting Cover Story

In the February 2007 edition of Strategic Finance, Anton Van Der Merwe and co-author, Jeffrey Thomson submitted an article titled The Low Down on Lean Accounting. Anton Van Der Merwe is a partner of Alta Via Consulting, LLC and Jeffrey Thomson is the Vice-President of Research at the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). The article addresses two critical questions, namely: 1) Is Lean Accounting a viable replacement for, complement to, and/or supplement for current and evolving management accounting approaches? and; 2) Does Lean Accounting have the capability to advance two of the more forward-looking roles undertaken by the management accountant: decision support and enterprise optimization?
You can read this cover story on the web at www.strategicfinancemag.com.
