Alta Via Consulting, LLC strongly believes in supporting higher education and academic research within the field of managerial accounting. A professorship was established at Northern Illinois University (NIU) located in DeKalb, Illinois.  Alta Via Consulting, through its named professorship, recognizes the need for continuous research to attract, develop, and acknowledge deserving faculty in a higher education environment. Therefore, we have awarded this professorship to Dr. B. Douglas (Doug) Clinton, managerial accounting professor of undergraduate and graduate studies in the Accountancy Department at NIU’s College of Business.  

Dr. Clinton's managerial accounting endeavors include papers co-authored with Alta Via principal, Anton van der Merwe, most noteably a series on consumption and cost behavior.  Dr. Clinton also co-authored  the Institute of Management Accountants' Statement on Management Accounting (SMA) on principles for managerial costing. And, he has served on both the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and IMA's task forces to formalize guidance on principles for managerial costing.  In July 2009, he participated in IFAC's Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) task force that produced the International Good Practice Guidance: Evaluating and Improving Costing in Organizations and its companion document, Evaluating the Costing Journey: A Costing Levels Continuum Maturity Model providing insights on universal costing principles. And, in 2012 - 13 he participated in the IMA's task force, which wrote their Managerial Costing Conceptual Framework.  Dr. Clinton has published articles in several academic and professional journals including:
