Dawn Sedgley speaking at Automotive News Webinar

Automotive companies today are highly focused on providing innovative, customer-driven products at the most competitive prices. Being able to quickly assess costs is not only a critical success factor – it’s an essential differentiator.

But the cost estimation process can be rigorous since it requires different groups to provide input so that many scenarios can be considered. What’s more, a strong need exists to estimate product costs from conception, in which case the part number might not yet exist and the details might be nothing more than an idea in the engineer’s mind.

Attend the webinar on Product Lifecycle Costing presented by SAP. Register here.

New Banking Masterclass Course — Training For Understanding the Fundamentals of Banking For Decision-MakersBanking Masterclass

Banking decision-makers are constantly confronted with the following questions:
→ Which product should be sold to which customer segment through which channel?
→ What should the price of products and services be?
→ In which channels to invest and dis-invest to maximize returns for shareholders?
→ How can sales, service and back office effectiveness be improved?
→ What should investment be in back office activities to ensure process efficiency?
→ How much capital is required?
→ How to manage the risks associated with interest rate movements, liquidity and credit risk?
→ Where must marketing focus be?
→ What is the impact of the economic cycle on the financial performance?
→ What is the impact of Banking Regulations on the operations?

How does all of the above-mentioned reflect in the financial performance? All of this implies that it is difficult for decision makers to understand the impact of their actions on financial performance over time; especially because of the complexity of the financial statements and that banks are usually functionally structured. Therefore, it is difficult to integrate all the information and see the “bigger” picture. This leads to inefficiencies with a “trial and error” method of learning.

Best practices for using an advanced management costing process along with budgeting in the public sectorLearn how to concurrently use SAP Funding Management with SAP controlling cost management functionality to provide your organization with a comprehensive picture of not only the amount of funding it has received, but also how much it is truly costing you to provide a service or product. Understand how SAP master data objects can be used to ensure all funding information is captured within the financial system. Session Two Date/Time: March 15th 4:00p - 5:15p Pacific
Tips for using activity-based costing for calculating the cost-to-serve for the public sector — Understanding the cost-to-serve in the public sector is critical when dealing with tight margins, constrained resources, and budgetary reductions. Critical in public sector is the ability to determine the cost-to-serve and this requires a strategy beyond peanut butter spreading. It must incorporate understanding the real performance costs through an understanding of resource and activity drivers. Learn how you can better understand and support your service costs using activity-based and resource-based costing concepts with the SAP controlling module and other SAP tools. Get a firsthand look at how to use activity-based costing functionality to identify process inefficiencies that could be driving up costs, such as the cost of technology and real estate and the impact on the amount charged to provide service to both internal and external customers. See how to improve individual processes as well as entire process chains, including resource allocations. Learn how to incorporate change management strategies to move your business from a transactional-based system to a true decision making tool. Get a real life example of how shared-support leaders can get an understanding of the service they provide and the cost involved through standard controlling functionality and advanced capabilities, such as templates.

Alta Via Consulting Assists With New IFAC International Good Practice Guidance Publication

The Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Committee of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), has just released its International Good Practice Guidance (IGPG) publication, Evaluating and Improving Costing in Organizations with the help of task force members Anton van der Merwe, Principle of Alta Via Consulting, Larry White, RCA Institute Executive Director and Northern Illinois University’s managerial accounting professor Dr. B.Douglas Clinton. Their contributions focused on providing significant insights to working with universal costing principles and how Resource Consumption Accounting offers organizations the greatest level of accuracy and visibility for managerial accounting information (see pages 19 & 25; Costing Levels Maturity model). We would like to thank IFAC for allowing us the opportunity to contribute to this international guidance paper and “how better costing can result in better management decision-making”.

Alta Via’s Sponsored Webcast Provided Excellent Forum for RCA Q&A’s

Resource Consumption Accounting: Linking Operations and Finance to Drive Business Performance webinar held July 16 was well received and provided an excellent opportunity for thoughtful questions asked by participants in the Q&A portion of the webcast. According to Larry White, Executive Director for the RCA Institute, “The webcast with MESA demonstrated the need by operations managers for greater insights and participation into the determination of costs in their organization”. Mr. White elaborated, “Too often, cost information is based on information for GAAP financial statements, which simply aren't designed to meet the decision making needs of managers inside an organization”. A transcript of the Q&A’s, answered by Larry White, Wolfgang Doeller from macs Controlling™ and Mark Arrieri, Controller, US Technical Products from Neenah Paper, offers valuable insight and is provided courtesy of the RCA Institute. Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Acknowledges Benefits of RCA in Sustainability Framework

The International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), through one of its independent international standard-setting boards, released a Sustainability Framework that has generated a record 33,000 page views since its launch in February '09. In this web-based document, the Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) committee members have recognized and cited Resource Consumption Accounting (RCA) as one of the key ways to help organizations “improve their understanding of environmental (and social) costs through their costing systems and models”. The RCA reference can be found under the sub-headingImproving Information Flows to Support Decisions under the Internal Management area of the Framework. The committee informs readers that proper cost allocation can be built "directly into the cost accounting system" and RCA is an alternative that offers this functionality.
